Lithium Hydroxide

Overview: Lithium hydroxide (LiOH) is a caustic alkali, existing as a white crystalline powder or small granules in solid form. Its relative density is 1.46 g/cm³, melting point is 471℃, and boiling point is 925℃. It begins to decompose at its boiling point and completely decomposes at 1626℃. It is slightly soluble in ethanol, soluble in methanol, and insoluble in ether. Due to the exothermic reaction upon dissolution and the increased density of the solution after dissolution, its concentration in a saturated aqueous solution at 288K can reach 5.3 mol/L. It can be considered a strong base: Kb = 0.675, pK = 0.17. The monohydrate is a monoclinic crystal with a solubility of 22.3 g/100 g water (10℃) and a density of 1.51 g/cm³. It is strongly alkaline; therefore, its saturated solution can alter the structure of phenolphthalein, changing it from deep red to colorless. It readily absorbs carbon dioxide from the air. Lithium hydroxide is highly corrosive and irritating.

Applications

Lithium hydroxide can be used as a developing agent in spectral analysis and as a lubricant. As an additive in alkaline battery electrolytes, it can increase capacity by 12%–15% and extend service life by 2–3 times. Lithium hydroxide is also mainly used in the positive electrode material of power batteries for new energy vehicles. It is used as a carbon dioxide absorbent to purify the air inside submarines. The chemical equation is: 2LiOH(solid) + CO2(gas) = Li2CO3(solid) + H2O(liquid). It can be used in many applications such as lithium salt manufacturing, organic acid titration, and photographic developing agents.

LiOH is one of the main raw materials for producing high-grade lithium-based greases. Lithium hydroxide has a wide range of applications, mainly in chemical raw materials, chemical reagents, battery industry, petroleum, metallurgy, glass, ceramics, etc., and is also an important raw material for the defense industry, atomic energy industry, and aerospace industry. Lithium-based greases made with lithium hydroxide have a long service life, strong water resistance, good fire resistance, are difficult to oxidize, and maintain stable performance during repeated heat-cooling-heating cycles. They are suitable for temperatures ranging from -50℃ to +300℃ and are widely used for lubrication in military equipment, aircraft, automobiles, rolling mills, and various mechanical transmission parts.

lithium hydroxide anhydrous: Anhydrous lithium hydroxide batteries can achieve large and ultra-large capacities, but their cost is significantly higher than that of monohydrate lithium hydroxide batteries.

lithium hydroxide monohydrate: Monohydrate lithium hydroxide batteries can only achieve small capacities.

Packaging, Storage, Handling, and Transportation

Lithium hydroxide is packaged in cardboard drums and steel drums.

Packaging specifications:

  • 50 kg/cardboard drum, 420 drums/20-foot container;
  • 250 kg/steel drum, 80 drums/20-foot container.

Storage Precautions: Store in a dry, clean warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. Prevent direct sunlight. Keep packaging sealed. Store separately from oxidizers, acids, carbon dioxide, and food chemicals; do not mix. The storage area should be equipped with suitable materials to contain leaks.
Transportation Precautions: When transporting by rail, strictly follow the dangerous goods loading table in the Ministry of Railways' "Rules for the Transportation of Dangerous Goods". Packaging must be intact and loading must be secure at the time of shipment. During transportation, ensure that containers do not leak, collapse, fall, or become damaged. Mixing or transporting with oxidizers, acids, and food chemicals is strictly prohibited. Transport vehicles should be equipped with leak emergency handling equipment. Protect from exposure to sunlight, rain, and high temperatures during transportation. When transporting goods by road, follow the prescribed routes and do not stop in residential areas or densely populated areas.
